Planning for Privacy and Security

When you build a custom home, privacy is much easier to plan for from the beginning. Where the house sits, which way the windows face, and even where the driveway enters the property can make a noticeable difference once you are living there.

Start With the Lot

The lot itself can do a lot of the work. Wooded areas, longer setbacks, changes in grade, and the position of neighboring homes can all influence where your home should sit.

By the time the foundation is poured, those decisions are already taking shape. You can see how the home relates to the road, the surrounding property, and nearby homes.

Let the Landscaping Do Some Work

Trees, layered plantings, hedges, berms, and thoughtfully placed walls can soften views into a property without making the yard feel boxed in. In many cases, landscaping is a much better answer than simply adding a taller fence.

It can also help define different parts of the property. A pool, patio, outdoor kitchen, or firepit area can feel tucked away even when the rest of the yard remains open.

Window placement matters too. Large windows can bring in plenty of natural light without leaving bedrooms, gathering spaces, or outdoor areas feeling exposed.

Security Without Feeling Closed In

Security is another thing that is easier to think through while the home is being designed. You might want:

• A video doorbell at the main entrance
• Cameras covering the driveway or other key areas
• Smart locks on the doors you use most
• Exterior lights that come on automatically
• Alerts when someone pulls into the driveway

Thinking about these things ahead of time can help with wiring, camera placement, lighting, and access to the garage and other entrances.

The same goes for privacy. Maybe you want the backyard screened from neighboring homes. Maybe you want the patio hidden from the street, or a clearer view of anyone coming up the driveway. Those are good things to talk about before the plans are finalized.
